A recent report from the World Health Organization estimated that over 3 million patients could die each year from healthcare associated infections if something isn’t urgently done. Effective, yet simple infection prevention practices, such as regular hand hygiene, proper sterilization of equipment, and adherence to guidelines for the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), allow workers to treat patients safely while creating an environment with much less risk for the public.
Failure to develop programs and apply effective infection prevention measures can result in legal pitfalls as well. Noncompliance with effective IC practices can result in liability claims, violation of state regulatory requirements, OSHA violations, worker’s comp claims and other legal pitfalls. These citations can lead to loss of licensure, fines, and litigation.

About the Speakers:
Julie Janeway, MSA, JD
Julie has been a Michigan life sciences and health law attorney for twenty-six years. She is the co-owner and General Counsel of Principled Healthcare Consulting, the principal attorney at Janeway Law PLLC, and also serves as the external General Counsel for Advize Health. Previously, she served as the Interim Chief Legal Counsel for an international healthcare company operating in four countries, and she practiced with Foley, Baron, Metzger & Julip, PLLC, heading the Healthcare Law Department. Her law firm practice included compliance, risk management, healthcare professional licensing defense, business/corporate law, employment law, pharmacy law, PSO/PSES (PSWP) development, audit response/defense/mitigation, independent internal and parallel investigations, contracting and other fields of healthcare and life sciences law, and all related training for healthcare entities, practitioners and practitioner organizations, and other businesses and associations in the healthcare and life sciences industries.
Linda Weirauch, MSN, RN, CPHQ
Linda is a seasoned registered nurse with over twenty-five years of experience in leadership, risk management, and quality across diverse healthcare settings, including outpatient physician practices, acute care, and critical illness recovery hospitals.
In her distinguished career, Linda has spearheaded multiple process improvement teams for core measure databases and Blue Cross Blue Shield clinical collaborative programs. She has served as the Quality lead for The Joint Commission (TJC) Stroke Certification and Total Joint Replacement Programs. Her additional responsibilities have encompassed the roles of lead facilitator for accreditation survey and state site audits. Currently, Linda holds the position of Market Director of Quality Management, Risk, and Infection Control at two Select Specialty Hospitals in Michigan. In this capacity, she has successfully directed efforts that have enhanced patient quality outcomes, mitigated risks in clinical care, and bolstered patient safety. Notably, she has led initiatives to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), improve medical record documentation and compliance, and achieve Hospital of Excellence recognition in 2018, 2019, and 2022.
